SITUATIONAL FUNCTIONS IN ENGLISH: (The Illocutionary Force Of Speech Acts) (EFL PEDAGOGY)

About

It is disheartening to observe that a vast majority of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students are often exposed to ineffective methods of learning the language. Typically, they are required to memorize isolated word lists or given unrelated passages for reading and listening exercises. As a result, when they need to engage in role-play scenarios or, even worse, use their English skills in real-life conversations, they often struggle to communicate effectively due to a lack of necessary linguistic tools. The absence of crucial situational functions, also known as speech acts in the field of pragmatics (the study of language use in communication), is particularly concerning. What makes this issue even more alarming is the understanding that these functional elements of communication are unique to each language. Attempting a word-for-word translation of these language functions from one language to another often leads to absurd meanings. Therefore, it is of utmost importance for every EFL learner to develop a diverse range of natural English situational functions. This is the central concern that this book aims to address. By providing numerous examples and sentences that demonstrate essential speech acts, it seeks to fill a significant gap in linguistic education. The book strives to bridge this linguistic divide by offering thousands of real-life examples of these crucial language functions within their respective contexts!
